From both sides of the curtain to both sides of the camera, Chief Instructor and Founder Jim Dougherty has spent the past five decades learning and continues to explore how stories are told.
Beginning with his first stage performance in 1975, Jim’s exploration of storytelling through acting, directing, design, stunt performance, filmmaking, and coaching has shaped the philosophy behind Indy Actors Academy. Those experiences provide a foundation for helping actors understand the collaborative process of storytelling and how their work serves the story and connects with an audience.
Indy Actors Academy focuses on acting for film and television, helping actors develop the craft, awareness, and practical skills needed to work in front of the camera.
Acting does not exist separately from filmmaking. The actor is part of a larger creative process that includes the director, cinematographer, lighting, sound, editing, production design, and everyone who contributes to bringing a story to life. Understanding that collaboration allows actors to make stronger choices and better understand how their work serves the story.
At Indy Actors Academy, technique is a tool in service of storytelling. Camera awareness, script analysis, scene work, improvisation, audition technique, self-taping, continuity, and the practical knowledge of working on a set are all tools designed to help actors make choices that support the story.
The approach at Indy Actors Academy is built on a simple philosophy: there is no single path to becoming a better actor. Great artists continue learning, asking questions, exploring different perspectives, and developing a process that allows them to work truthfully and consistently.
The Academy draws from decades of experience in theatre, film, stunt training, martial arts, and filmmaking. Those experiences have shaped an approach based on curiosity, collaboration, and the belief that every artist has more to discover.
Indy Actors Academy exists to help actors explore their craft, understand the collaborative nature of storytelling, and develop the tools to serve the story while creating a genuine connection with an audience.
